(Wait! Have we just re-invented advertising? The picture here functions as an ad. And yet it's not an ad. It's merely a gorgeous image to inspire poetry. And it's an ad. Hmm... imagine if all advertising was like this?)
Anyway thanks Brian. I'm a fan. I almost wish I was 19 again and prowling for an apprenticeship, ha ha. I ran a prop/modelmaking/sculpting shop for ten years and love working with my hands but it never extended to foundry kind of work.
That aside, there are pieces of yours I like better than this one, but I chose this because everything that 'isn't the gate' (if you can dig it) is really working here. Which is to say, it's your gate sure, but it's also an 'every' gate. There is something beyond and we must pass through. Kind of thing...

Well I'm glad to have you piling in, mate. Otherwise I just wanted to say - Ha Ha! Er... that's me crowing to myself at Brian mentioning Muslim art. For me, there's something sublime in Islamic art and I'd been wondering if I wasn't seeing hints of it in your work. There's a lot to it and it's absurdly underappreciated. Most excellent.
As are the haiku! Well done all.

Hey John. As for 'not very cheery', the thing is that this is a gate. Gates are an entry to a place but also a barrier. That's the point. It is the nature of gates to beckon and deter.
